Will cats adjust easily to using crystal litter?

I adopted a (formerly) stray cat a couple weeks ago and he adapted to my apartment perfectly. He always uses his litter box, which is filled with regular clumping litter. I'm considering using crystal litter, because I eventually want to switch to the Scoop Free automatic litter box. So I thought I'd get him used to using crystal litter first. But do cats even like crystal litter?!
