Is Pierre McGuire french Canadian?

I looked it up and he was born and raised in New Jersey. Also his real name is Regis, not Pierre. I'm wondering why he acts like he's french Canadian. Every time a francophone touches the puck he pronounces their name with an exremely french accent? Did he live there for a while or something? I dont get it...
