What would happened to the ecosystem if the cactus no longer exist?

Cacti are plants that play very important roles in our ecosystem. If they no longer existed many animals including birds and reptiles (like the desert tortoise which feed on the cactus stem) would lose their food and shelter, messing up the balance. Nature is a very complex interaction of many animals and creatures, all in some sort of a balance that can upset nature and the ecosystem.
